Georgia is the land of castles and wild landscape. It’s perfect for adventure cycling and is permanently inviting you for just another detour. At the beginning I ülan to go to the coastal city of Batumi as fast as possible, but then I meet two german cyclists who recommend a little gravel detour to the historic city of Vardzia. It’s a cave monastery inside the sandstone layer of a mountain dating back to the 12th century. Over 5000 people called it once their home and still up to today a few monks live there. It’s possible to visit the place with almost no restrictions.
In Achalziche I meet Dino an Italian cyclist and we decide to travel together for a while. We cross through some of the nicest landscapes of the Caucasus. Valleys are rough, mountains high and trees are changing to autumn colours. At Goderzi Pass we encounter a new companion travelling with us. His name is John Snow, he is a dog and joins us for a few days. We feed him and he guards our tents and bikes overnight. The rest of the time we play around and have fun. The big cities are nothing for a free dog, so he decides to stay behind and returns to the mountains. Good luck John!
